Timing is everything

with a movie under his belt n a soon-to-be-released album, its no
surprise tat jerry yan is excited about his post-f4 prospects.
members of the malaysian press r happily chatting amongst themselves
at the sheraton imperial kuala lumpur on a bright n cheery thursday
afternoon. they're at the presscon of jerry yan's debut film, magic
kitchen, waiting for the star to arrive. hwr, their smiles gradually
turn to agitation as word filters thru tat he is going to be late.
the taiwanese star finally materialises - three-and-a-half-hours
later! by then, most of the irate reporters have bolted. the few
who stayed on r the lucky recipients of yan's profuse apologies n
undivided attention.
wearing a green evisu t-shirt, the 27-year-old yan is one of asia's
hottest pin-ups. with his layered shoulder-length hair, cute dimples
n a winning smile, its not hard to understand y. his fan base spans
the whole of asia. on a recent promotional trip to the philippines,
yan visited president arroyo at malacanang palace, while swooning
girls in singapore have been known to go giddy at their white-
stockinged knees at a mere glimpse of the taiwanese star.
a former model, jerry yan chengxu burst onto the entertainment scene
as part of the group f4 in the tv series meteor garden. based on the
work of cartoonist kami youko, the series proved to be a sure-fire
hit n led to the release of an album entitled meteor rain tat sparked
sales of a million copies in asia. the 4some proceeded to embark on
an asian concert tour as well as host a tv show called abcdef4.
considered by many as merely possessing oodles of style n very little
substance, the group's popularity has been attributed to the fact
tat "women cant find romance in real life" or so says angie chai f4's
manager. she personally selected the 4 heartthrobs according to the
following criteria: good looks n a minimum height of 180cm.
interestingly the series was banned in china. mg was once described
by the mainland chinese media "as an updated version of the hippy
lifestyle with the concept of beauty being the most important thing n
men portrayed as being superior to women." hwr, the series
popularity has proven to be so great tat yan n his fellow group
members vanness wu, ken zhu n vic chou can embark on solo careers.
Its now yan's turn to show us wat he's made of as he follows hot-on-
the-heels of wu's debut in the movie star runner. he recently
appeared in his first movie role n starred alongside luminaries andy
lau n sammi cheng in the comic culinary spectacle entitled magic
kitchen.
how different was it for the fledgling actor to make movies compared
to a tv series? "making movies is much easier than shooting a tv
serial. its more relaxed n we're less pressed for time. when i was
working on mg, there were times when i had less than 4 hours sleep.
there is also less chance to develop a character on tv. we're always
under pressure," explains yan. "but i'll always have a soft spot for
tv bcos its where i started off." yan speaks fondly about working
with big-time stars like lau. "I enjoyed working with andy. we had
a lot of fun on the set. he's very easy going n gave me a lot of
advice. he's a person with many years of experience n someone i can
learn a lot from."
n on pairing up with sammi cheng in the film, he says, "she's like a
sister to me n helped me with my lines. we had a blast on the movie
set."
certainly, mk's director, lee chi ngai placed a lot of confidence in
yan's acting ability n gave him equal billing with the film industry
veterans. "The character i play in the movie is quite similar to my
personality. But i'd like to take on more challenging roles in
future. there's always room for improvement," says yan earnestly. a
good eg. is yan's cantonese skill - his voice was dubbed in the
movie. but the rookie actor is optimistic, "i'm planning to make a
movie where i speak in cantonese soon."
at a recent presscon in singapore, yan said tat he's getting more
comfortable in his own skin: "i've become a happier person. my
mentality has changed n i enjoy interacting with crowds more now."
with a movie under his belt, wats on the cards for yan?
"i'm planning to release an album in the next few months. the
project has been in the works for 2 years n i hope tat it will be
well received." he says.
whether its acting or singing, wats certain is yan's admirers - many
of whom dont even understand mandarin - will wait excitedly for their
idol's next project. with adulation like tis, who needs f4? yan
just needs to turn up on time.
